As Australia’s leading supplier of cans to the Craft Brew industry, Orora is thrilled to present the GABS Craft Beer Can Design Awards.
Celebrating the best in craft beer can design, the GABS Can Design Awards recognise the importance of great design and visual communication in a brewery’s efforts to engage customers.
The awards are brought to you by the team who produce the GABS Craft Beer & Cider Festivals, which hosts events in Auckland, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney each year. It is recognised as one of the world’s best beer festivals and GABS was proud to celebrate 10 years in 2020!
To enter the awards, Craft Brewers from across Australia were invited to submit one can design, which must be released within the year leading up to the awards. Mike Bray, MD of GABS said,
Over 160 Australian Craft Breweries entered the inaugural competition and the level of design was just incredible. With so many options on the market the first impression made by the can label has now become as important as the great beer inside.
The winner of the 2020 coveted ‘Orora Golden Can Trophy’ was Little Bang Brewing Co from South Australia with their stunning ‘Face Invertor’ can. They received a free set of printing plates for their next print with Orora, PLUS the honour of claiming the very first title in what GABS believe will come to be the gold standard award celebrating the most creative people in this exciting industry. The 2020 results can be found here.
As part of the 2020 program, GABS interviewed our very own Andrew Morwood, from Orora Beverage Cans Decoration Centre of Excellence (DCE). Check out his interview below to learn more about can decoration and find out just how aluminium cans are made, and the challenges in printing up to 1,800 cans a minute!

We know that a cutting-edge can design makes all the difference in attracting customer attention and growing your craft business. Combine that with 360 degrees of branding space on a can, and craft brewers get more room to showcase their creativity to consumers.
